Charles Krahn

Name: Charles Krahn

Where are you from? Fort Collins, Colorado, USA

What did you study? Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Gonzaga University.

What is your teaching experience? I have been teaching in Vietnam since 2012. I have been at AEG since 2013 teaching SSAT, TOEFL, ACT, SAT, General English, and Advanced Writing. Before coming to Vietnam, I worked for a year in Ghana as a math, science and English teacher in Sang Village. Why are you in Vietnam? Originally, I was only planning on staying in Vietnam for 6 months. However, I started working at AEG and for the first time actually enjoyed my job. I have now been here three years. I’ve come to love living in HCMC and relish the opportunity to travel around Asia.

What do you enjoy about teaching? I get a kick out of getting students engaged in material, whether it’s a research project about history, an article about social sciences, or classic literature. So, I am much more concerned about content than grammar. The really great thing for me about teaching is when students are able to make connections between different subjects and ideas. For example, when they can see how history and larger trends in society influence literature. For this reason, I especially enjoy getting to know students over longer periods of time. It’s often hard to see progress in the short term, but it’s so rewarding to see how kids mature as they develop their interests and better understand the world they are living in.

What are your interests that make you stand out? I am a news junkie and love international politics. Any spare time I have is usually spent reading. I am also an avid outdoorsman. During holidays, I love to go back home to the Rocky Mountains to go skiing in the winter or camping and fly-fishing in the summer. I also enjoy trekking around the less developed parts of Southeast Asia to go hiking, scuba diving, and kayaking.
